Lawrence Sutin, known for his nonfiction books, reads from his first novel, “When to Go Into the Water.” Spanning more than two centuries, the novel follows fictional writer Hector de Saint-Aureole and his novel, and includes imaginary responses from his imaginary readers. Sutin is the author of “All Is Change: The Two Thousand Year Journey of Buddhism to the West,” two biographies (Philip K. Dick and Aleister Crowley) and two memoirs, “Jack and Rochelle: A Holocaust Story of Love and Resistance” and “A Postcard Memoir.” He teaches at Hamline University and Vermont College. His writing awards include a Loft-McKnight grant, a Midland Writer’s Award, a Minnesota Book Award, and the Grand Prix de l’Imaginaire of France. He was the Hamline Teacher of the Year in 1992 and a National Teacher of the Year in 2005.
